IIM Guwahati MBA Admission 2026: Everything You Need to Know About India’s Newest IIM

IIM Guwahati’s first-ever PGP 2026–28 admission process is officially out. Here’s a complete, no-fluff breakdown — cutoffs, composite score formula, seat matrix, and what this means for CAT 2025 aspirants.

India now has its 22nd IIM. IIM Guwahati, inaugurated on February 14, 2026, under the mentorship of IIM Ahmedabad, has officially announced admissions to its first-ever PGP (MBA) batch for 2026–28. With a planned intake of 70 students, no WAT-PI round, and a merit-based composite score system, this is one of the most straightforward IIM admission processes in the country right now. Okay, real talk.

Every year, lakhs of CAT aspirants set their sights on IIM A, B, and C. And every year, most of them don’t make it — not because they’re not good enough, but because they’re fighting 3,000+ candidates above 99.5 percentile for 165 general category seats at Ahmedabad.

Meanwhile, a brand new IIM — backed by IIM Ahmedabad, with only 70 seats and a straightforward merit-based process — has just announced its first-ever admissions. And most people are ignoring it.

That’s a mistake worth correcting.

What Is IIM Guwahati — and Why Should You Care?

IIM Guwahati (IIMG) was formally inaugurated on February 14, 2026, making it the newest and 22nd IIM in India. It is also the first IIM in Assam — a region that for decades sent its brightest management aspirants to faraway cities because there was no IIM closer to home.

The institute is backed by a ₹555 crore government allocation over five years and operates under the direct mentorship of IIM Ahmedabad — the gold standard in Indian management education. That mentorship isn’t symbolic. It shapes the academic structure, governance, faculty development, and programme quality from day one.

Currently operating from a temporary campus at Tech City, Bongora, IIMG’s permanent campus is planned across 76.83 hectares in Palasbari, Kamrup district — a facility that’s expected to rival the best B-school campuses in the country once completed.

For CAT 2025 aspirants, the key question isn’t “Is IIM Guwahati worth it?” — it’s “Am I using this intelligently in my target strategy?” If you’re still building your IIM target list, our guide to the top IIM colleges in India is a good place to start.

The 3-Stage Admission Process Explained

IIM Guwahati’s PGP admission follows a clean three-stage process — simpler than most older IIMs because there is no WAT-PI round.

Table 1 — Admission Process Overview

Stage What Happens
Stage 0 Basic Academic Eligibility Check
Stage 1 CAT 2025 Percentile Eligibility (cutoffs applied)
Stage 2 Final Selection via Composite Score (CS)

Stage 0 filters out candidates who don’t meet the minimum academic requirements. Clear that, and you move to Stage 1, where your CAT sectional and overall percentiles are checked against the published cutoffs. Clear Stage 1, and you receive a confirmation email from IIMG (sent by March 31, 2026 — see official IIMG admission process →), after which you confirm your interest and submit your application with supporting documents. Your Composite Score then determines final selection — no interview, no essay, no WAT.

This is significant. It means your CAT score and academic record do all the talking. There’s no profile-boosting through an impressive interview or a well-written SOP. If your numbers are strong, you’re in.

Note: Unlike some IIMs that require a separate post-CAT application form, IIM Guwahati’s process is handled through the confirmation email sent by IIMG. Read our guide on which IIMs require separate MBA application forms →

Seat Matrix: Category-Wise Breakdown

IIM Guwahati’s first PGP batch has a planned intake of 70 students. Seat distribution follows Government of India reservation norms, with PwD seats calculated at 5% horizontally across each category.

Table 2 — IIM Guwahati PGP 2026–28 Seat Matrix

Category Quota (%) Total Seats PwD Non-PwD
General / Unreserved 40.5% 28 1 27
EWS 10.0% 7 0 7
NC-OBC 27.0% 19 1 18
SC 15.0% 11 1 10
ST 7.5% 5 0 5
Total 100% 70 3 67

Note 1: PwD (Persons with Disabilities) seats are calculated at 5% horizontal reservation within each category, subject to rounding off. They are not additional seats — they are carved out from within each category’s allocation.

Note 2: Seat distribution follows Government of India reservation norms as mandated for all centrally funded IIMs — NC-OBC (27%), SC (15%), ST (7.5%), EWS (up to 10%), PwD (5% horizontal).

Note 3: The total intake of 70 seats is for the PGP 2026–28 batch only. Batch size may increase in subsequent years as the institute scales up.

For general category candidates: 28 seats total, 27 non-PwD. That’s a small, close-knit cohort — which cuts both ways. Placement visibility per student is high, but competition for each seat is also meaningful.

Academic Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Degree Requirements

You must hold — or be in the final year of — a bachelor’s degree of at least three years duration after completing 10+2. Here’s what the minimum marks look like:

  • General / EWS / NC-OBC candidates: Minimum 50% aggregate in bachelor’s degree
  • SC / ST / PwD candidates: Minimum 45% aggregate

IIM Guwahati also considers Class 10 and Class 12 performance in its scoring system — so consistent academic performance across your entire career matters here, not just your final degree grade.

Final Year Students — Can You Apply?

Yes. IIM Guwahati allows final-year students to apply and can provisionally offer admission. But two hard deadlines apply:

Table 3 — Submission Deadlines for Final-Year Students (Official Important Dates →)

Document Deadline
Certificate confirming completion of degree June 30, 2026
Final marksheet and degree certificate December 31, 2026

Miss either of these deadlines and your provisional admission is cancelled. No exceptions. Plan accordingly if you’re a final-year student.

CAT 2025 Cutoffs for IIM Guwahati

IIM Guwahati requires candidates to clear both overall percentile and sectional percentile cutoffs in all three CAT sections — VARC, DILR, and QA. Additionally, you must score a positive raw score (greater than zero) in every section.

Table 4 — IIM Guwahati CAT 2025 Cutoffs

Category Non-PwD Overall %ile Non-PwD Section %ile PwD Overall %ile PwD Section %ile
General 85 75 75 65
EWS 85 75 75 65
NC-OBC 80 70 70 60
SC 75 65 65 55
ST 65 55 55 45

Two things to note here. First, an 85 percentile overall cutoff for general category is the floor — not the realistic conversion score. Given that final selection is purely composite-score based and batch size is 70, the actual competitive range will be significantly higher among applicants who confirm interest. Second, sectional cutoffs at 75 percentile in each section means you cannot afford to have a weak section. VARC-weak engineering students, take note.

How the Composite Score Is Calculated

This is the most important section for serious applicants. IIM Guwahati uses a Composite Score (CS) formula to rank all shortlisted candidates within each category. Final selection is based purely on this rank.

CS = 0.65 × NCAT  +  0.35 × NAR

Where:

  • NCAT = Normalized CAT Score = (CAT Overall Normalized Score) ÷ (Maximum Possible CAT Score)
  • NAR = Normalized Academic Rating = (A + B + C + D) ÷ 35

The NAR components break down as follows:

  • A — Score based on Class 10 marks
  • B — Score based on Class 12 marks
  • C — Score based on bachelor’s degree performance
  • D — Score based on work experience

What This Means in Practice

Your CAT score carries 65% of the weight — it’s the biggest single lever you have. But the 35% academic component is not trivial. A candidate with a 90 percentile and outstanding academic scores (Class 10, 12, and graduation) can outrank a 93 percentile candidate who had poor academic consistency. This is especially relevant for candidates from non-engineering backgrounds who tend to have stronger academic profiles.

Work experience also factors in through component D — so if you have relevant professional experience, that’s a genuine advantage here. For a deeper look at how profile factors interact with CAT scores across all IIMs, read our breakdown: CAT percentile vs profile — what actually gets you into IIMs →

Final Selection Process

Once composite scores are computed, category-wise merit lists are prepared separately for General, EWS, NC-OBC, SC, ST, and PwD candidates. Your rank within your category determines whether you receive an admission offer.

There is no WAT, no group discussion, no personal interview at IIM Guwahati for the 2026–28 batch. The entire process from CAT to final selection is document-and-score-based. This is a meaningful distinction from older IIMs where interview performance can override a relatively lower CAT percentile.

One age requirement to note: All selected candidates must be at least 19 years of age as on June 30, 2026 (i.e., born on or before June 30, 2007).

🔑 The Bottom Line on Selection

This is one of the most transparent, merit-based IIM admission processes in the country. The formula is public. The weights are published. There’s no subjective interview stage. That’s a double-edged reality — your score is everything, but at least you know exactly what “everything” means. Build toward it.

Should You Apply to IIM Guwahati?

Here’s the honest answer: it depends on where you are in your CAT journey and what your target band looks like.

✅ Apply if you ❌ Think carefully if you
✅ Scored 85–93 percentile (general category) and want an IIM degree ❌ Are targeting 99+ percentile and old IIMs — confirm interest if shortlisted, but this isn’t your primary target
✅ Have strong, consistent academics across Class 10, 12, and graduation — the composite formula rewards this directly ❌ Need placement certainty — first batches at new IIMs take time to build recruiter track records
✅ Are comfortable being a founding batch member — smaller cohort, more faculty visibility, higher per-student attention ❌ Have a hard location constraint — Guwahati is a growing city but a significant relocation for many candidates
✅ Value the IIM Ahmedabad mentorship over a more established but lower-tier older IIM
✅ Have relevant work experience — it contributes directly to your composite score via component D

💡 The Big Picture

IIM Guwahati is a genuine IIM — backed by ₹555 crore in government funding, mentored by IIM Ahmedabad, and offering the full PGP degree. Being in the first batch means high visibility, close faculty attention in a small cohort, and the ability to shape the culture of a brand-new institution. That is not nothing. For aspirants who scored 85–93 in the general category with strong academics, this could be the IIM opportunity they’ve been waiting for. And once you’re in, knowing which IIM suits which career path will help you make the most of it.
