IPMAT 2027 Exam at a Glance
The IPMAT is the entrance test for the five-year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM) at IIM Indore, which takes students straight after Class 12 into a programme that runs through to an MBA-level degree. The IPMAT 2027 exam will decide admission to the 2027 batch. Everything below about the latest cycle comes from IIM Indore’s admission procedure for the 2026-31 batch, and everything about 2027 is expected, not announced. Eligibility: Who Can Apply
For the 2026-31 batch, the rules published by IIM Indore were these:
- Age: born on or after 1 August 2006, with a five-year relaxation (born on or after 1 August 2001) for SC, ST and PwD candidates.
- Class 12: passed in 2024 or 2025, or appearing in 2026, with candidates likely to finish by 31 July 2026 allowed to apply provisionally.
- Class 10: a pass in Standard X or an equivalent is required.
- Marks: the procedure we read does not state a minimum percentage, but it reserves the right to set conditions on equivalence and recognition. Class 10 and 12 marks are used only for eligibility and carry no weight in the final merit.
If the age rule moves forward by a year, as it normally does, it would mean candidates born on or after 1 August 2007 for the IPMAT 2027 exam. That is our expectation, not an announcement, so check the 2027 notice before you assume your age is safe.
Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme
The test has three sections of 40 minutes each, in a fixed order that is the same for every candidate. Each section runs on its own clock, so you cannot carry spare time from one into the next.
| Section | Time | Marks per question | Negative marking | Questions in recent papers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Ability (short answer) | 40 minutes | 4 | None | About 15 |
| Quantitative Ability (MCQ) | 40 minutes | 4 | 1 mark per wrong answer | About 30 |
| Verbal Ability (MCQ) | 40 minutes | 4 | 1 mark per wrong answer | About 45 |
Two things follow from the marking. A wrong MCQ costs 1 mark against 4 for a right one, so guessing breaks even at a 20% chance of being right (1 divided by 4 plus 1). That makes an educated elimination worth attempting. Short-answer questions carry no penalty at all, so every one of them deserves a real attempt, even a partial one.
How Selection Works: Test Score, Interview and Merit
The process in the latest cycle had a clear sequence, and understanding it tells you where to put your effort for the IPMAT 2027 exam.
- Cut-offs first: you need a positive raw score and a minimum mark in each of the three sections. The admissions committee sets these, and they vary by category.
- Interview shortlisting: the aptitude test score is built from the three sections with weights of 25 for QA (MCQ), 25 for QA (short answer) and 50 for Verbal Ability.
- Personal interview: held online or in person, with minimum performance levels on each parameter.
- Final merit: a composite of 65% aptitude test score and 35% personal interview, ranked category-wise.
Key takeaway
Verbal Ability carries a weight of 50, as much as both quant sections together. Students who treat IPMAT as a pure maths test lose the single biggest lever. Build reading and grammar habits as seriously as you build quant speed, and remember that every section needs a minimum mark, so one weak section can end your application.
What to Study in Each Section
IIM Indore does not publish a detailed syllabus, so the list below follows the school-level maths and English skills that recent papers have tested. Treat it as a guide, not a guarantee.
| Section | Core topics | How to start |
|---|---|---|
| QA (short answer) | Number system, algebra, geometry, mensuration, arithmetic, and some higher-maths ideas from Class 11 and 12 | Solve with a written method, since there are no options to check against |
| QA (MCQ) | The same topics, with quicker questions and options to test | Practise elimination and back-solving along with speed |
| Verbal Ability | Reading comprehension, grammar and usage, vocabulary, sentence and paragraph ordering | Read daily and learn grammar rules before timed practice |
A Month-by-Month Plan for the IPMAT 2027 Exam
With the exam expected in early May 2027, you have about six and a half months. The plan below also respects Class 12 boards, which usually fall in the middle of this window. Adjust it if your own board dates differ.
| Months | Focus | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| October to December 2026 | Foundations | Complete school-level number system, algebra and geometry, read for 30 minutes daily, and learn core grammar rules |
| January to March 2027 | Boards plus light practice | Keep boards first; practise a small daily quant and verbal set so the habit does not break, and submit the application on time |
| Late March to mid-April 2027 | Timed practice | Do sectional sets under the 40-minute clock and keep an error log |
| Mid-April to the exam | Mock sprint | Take full 120-minute mocks with all three sections, analyse each one, and keep the last two days light |

Other Integrated Programme Exams to Keep in View
IIM Indore is not the only institute offering a five-year programme after Class 12. IIM Rohtak runs its own integrated programme with its own test, and the National Testing Agency conducts a separate common test for other IIM programmes. Their patterns, eligibility rules and dates differ from IIM Indore’s, and we were not able to verify their 2027 details from official pages, so we are not quoting them here. Check each institute’s own website before you decide which tests to write, and note that a plan built around the IPMAT 2027 exam will give you a strong base for any of them. You can read how Rohtak describes its programme on the IIM Rohtak website.
Do not rely on old numbers
Dates, age limits, fees and the number of questions can all change from one cycle to the next. The application fee in the latest cycle was Rs. 4,130 for the General category and Rs. 2,065 for SC, ST and PwD candidates, including GST, but the 2027 fee will be announced with the notice. Use the IIM Indore website as the final authority.
In short, the IPMAT 2027 exam rewards a long, calm preparation with balanced attention to verbal and quant. Start with the foundations now, protect your board exams, and let the official notice, not rumour, set your final dates.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the IPMAT 2027 exam?
It is expected in the first week of May 2027, since the 2026 exam was held on 4 May. The official date will come with the IIM Indore notice, so treat this as expected until then.
What is the pattern of the IPMAT 2027 exam?
In the latest cycle the test lasted 120 minutes with three 40-minute sections: QA (MCQ), QA (short answer) and Verbal Ability (MCQ). Each question carried 4 marks, with a 1-mark penalty for wrong answers except in the short-answer section.
Is there negative marking?
Yes, 1 mark is deducted for each wrong MCQ in both the quant and verbal sections. The QA short-answer section has no negative marking, so attempt every question there.
How is the final selection decided?
Candidates who clear the section-wise cut-offs are shortlisted for a personal interview using a weighted test score (25 for each quant section and 50 for verbal). The final merit is 65% test score and 35% interview, ranked category-wise.
Do Class 10 and 12 marks count?
In the latest cycle they were used for eligibility only and carried no weight in the composite score. Check the 2027 procedure for any change.
When should I start preparing?
Now is a good time if you are in Class 12, and Class 11 is not too early. Build the foundations in the first few months, protect your board exams, and move to timed mocks in April.
