The most important thing about a CAT timetable is the sequence. What you study in Month 1 builds the foundation for what you practice in Month 3. Jumping out of sequence — starting with mocks before basics, or doing Geometry before Arithmetic — creates gaps that compound into errors under exam pressure.

The One Principle That Runs Through Everything
Two things remain constant from Day 1 to Day 180: 2 RCs every single day and 20–30 QA questions every single day. These are not negotiable — not on weekdays, not on weekends, not during mock weeks. VARC fluency and QA speed are both built through daily compounding. A student who reads 2 RCs every day for 180 days has done 360 RCs by CAT. That is an unbeatable foundation.
2. Month-by-Month Breakdown — What to Cover and When
Build the Foundation: Number System + Arithmetic Part 1 + Arrangements
QA: Start with Number System (Factors, Divisibility, HCF/LCM, Remainders, Last Digit). Then Arithmetic Part 1: Percentages, Profit & Loss, Ratio & Proportion. These topics account for ~30% of QA. 20 questions/day — no timer in June. Accuracy first.
DILR: Linear Arrangement (6 sets) → Circular Arrangement (6 sets) → Selection (8 sets) → Binary Logic (8 sets). No timer. Understand the structure of each set type fully before moving to the next.
VARC: Build the reading habit. One article daily from The Economist or Aeon Essays. 2 RCs/day with summarisation focus — after each RC, write one sentence capturing the author’s main argument. Genre focus: Philosophy and Sociology (historically high CAT weightage).

QA: Complete Arithmetic — Averages, Mixtures & Alligation, Time & Work, Time-Speed-Distance (highest Arithmetic weightage in CAT). Begin Algebra: Linear Equations, Quadratic Equations. 25 questions/day. Introduce timer for Arithmetic — 2 minutes per question maximum.
DILR: Rankings & Order (8 sets) → Games & Tournaments (12 sets — high CAT weightage) → Venn Diagrams (12 sets) → Distribution (12 sets). Timer starts from set 31 onwards — 12–15 minutes per set.
VARC: Add Process of Elimination technique — for every RC question, eliminate 2 options before choosing. Add Critical Reasoning concepts (applies to ~30% of RC questions). Genre shift: Science and Business & Economics. Add 4 VA questions/day alongside RCs.
Algebra Complete + Geometry Begins + Mixed DILR Exposure
QA: Complete Algebra — Surds & Indices, Logarithms (easier than they look, high CAT frequency), Inequalities, Functions & Graphs. Begin Geometry: Lines, Angles, Triangles (most important Geometry topic in CAT). 30 questions/day mixed across all covered topics.
DILR: Scheduling (12 sets) → Routes & Networks (14 sets — top 3 CAT weightage topics) → Quant-Based Reasoning (14 sets — highest weightage in DILR) → Caselets (16 sets — consistently high CAT weightage). Begin mixing set types in the final week.
VARC: 3 RCs/day. VA: 6 Para Jumble questions/day (TITA — no negative marking, never skip). Genre: History and Art & Literature. Full VARC sectionals begin.

QA: Complete Geometry — Circles and Polygons (CAT regularly combines Triangles + Circles in one question). Permutation & Combination basics (do not skip — easy CAT questions exist here). Probability basics. 30–40 questions/day, full timer, mixed across entire syllabus.
DILR: Topic-wise preparation ends. From September, solve only mixed sets — CAT never announces the set type. PYQ sets (2020–2025) are the gold standard for mixed practice. Set selection practice becomes the primary skill.
VARC: 3–4 RCs/day. All VA types rotating daily. Accuracy tracking — log every question you get wrong and which wrong-option type trapped you (too extreme, scope error, true but not from passage, distortion). Genre rotation complete — no gaps.
Revision + Mock Domination + Execution Lock
QA: No new topics. Revision of weak areas only. 40 questions/day across entire syllabus — speed and accuracy simultaneously. Identify the 3–4 topics where you are below 70% accuracy and spend focused time there.
DILR: Mixed sets + PYQs only. Set selection practice under time pressure. One new DILR set type you have not seen before every 2–3 days — builds adaptability for the 1–2 unfamiliar sets that appear in every CAT paper.
VARC: 4 RCs/day. Attempt strategy locked — fixed RC order, fixed time per RC (8 minutes: 4 read + 4 answer). VA daily. No new strategies in November.
3. The Non-Negotiable Daily Routine
Timetables fail not because the plan is wrong — they fail because daily execution is inconsistent. The students who reach 99%ile are not the ones with the most ambitious plans. They are the ones who did the boring, consistent work every single day for 5 months.

The single most common timetable mistake: starting full mocks too early (before the foundation is solid) or too late (not enough cycles to improve). The right timing is when you have completed roughly 50% of the QA syllabus — typically the end of Month 2 (July) when Arithmetic is complete and Algebra has begun.

The 3-Step Mock Analysis Protocol
- Step 1 — Categorise every error: Wrong because of concept gap? Silly mistake? Time trap? Spent too long? Each error type has a different fix. Knowing which type is dominating your errors tells you exactly where to spend the next 3 days of practice.
- Step 2 — Categorise every skip: Questions you left — should you have attempted them? Was the difficulty actually manageable if you had tried? Over-skipping and under-skipping are both real problems. Track your skip decisions across mocks.
- Step 3 — Set one specific target for the next mock: One behavioural change per mock. “I will leave any QA question I cannot start in 45 seconds.” “I will read DILR set instructions fully before deciding to attempt.” One target, applied consistently, compounds into a fundamentally better mock taker over 40 attempts.
