7-Month CAT Preparation Plan

May to November

CAT Preparation Plan
Preparing for CAT over 7 months gives you ample time to absorb key concepts, practice extensively, and refine your exam strategy.
Below is a structured month-by-month plan to guide your journey from May to November.

📅 May: Foundation Building

Area

Focus Topics/Activities

Quantitative Aptitude (QA)

Focus on the basics of Arithmetic.

Key topics:

  • Percentages
  • Ratios
  • Averages
  • Time & Work
  • Time-Speed-Distance.

Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR)

Start with simple graphs (Bar, Line, Pie) and basic puzzles – seating arrangements, blood relations.

Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC)

Begin reading daily — focus on editorials, novels, and opinion pieces. Tackle simple para-jumbles and paragraph summaries.

Mock Tests

Not needed yet; focus on concept-building. Begin taking small practice tests for each section to check your understanding.

Goal

Lay a strong foundation by ensuring you understand the basics of each section without worrying too much about speed or accuracy yet.

This month is all about establishing your foundation. Focus on understanding fundamental concepts in Quantitative Aptitude (QA), Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC). Dedicate time to building habits like daily reading and solving basic quantitative problems. This will set a strong base for the months ahead.

👉 Start with Quantifiers’ Quantitative Aptitude covering Arithmetic and Logical Reasoning. Ideal for absolute beginners.

📅 June: Strengthening Concepts

Area

Focus Topics/Activities

Quantitative Aptitude (QA)

Move into Algebra (Linear & Quadratic Equations) and Geometry basics (Lines, Angles, Triangles).

DILR

Tackle moderate-level DILR sets – arrangements, basic reasoning. Focus on speed and accuracy.

VARC

Solve short Reading Comprehension (RC) passages. Work on vocabulary – learn 10–15 new words daily.

Mock Tests

Optional at this point; focus on mastering individual topics first.

Goal

By the end of June, aim to cover about 50% of the syllabus lightly. Focus on conceptual clarity rather than speed.

In June, you will deepen your understanding of key topics. For QA, move into Algebra and Geometry. DILR should include moderate difficulty puzzles, and in VARC, start solving short RC passages. Reading regularly will expand your vocabulary. The goal is to progress gradually while ensuring a solid grasp of concepts.

👉 Lay a strong foundation with Quant Formulae E-Book and Geometry Shortcuts Book.

📅 July: Heavy Practice and Early Testing

Area

Focus Topics/Activities

Quantitative Aptitude (QA)

Tackle topics like Mensuration, Progressions, and tougher Arithmetic problems.

DILR

Solve 2–3 sets of puzzles every day to develop speed. Include new types like circular arrangements and tournaments.

VARC

Solve 2 RC passages per day. Work on Para-jumbles, Para-summary, and Odd One Out questions.

Mock Tests

Begin taking 1 mock test every 2 weeks. Focus on analyzing your mock results in detail.

Goal

Develop accuracy and work on building speed in tackling different types of questions.

In July, start intensifying your practice by solving a wide variety of questions. Focus on improving your accuracy and concept retention. Begin attempting mock tests (1 every 2 weeks) and spend time analyzing mistakes. This month should help you transition from understanding to application of concepts.

👉 Attempt the Quantifiers CAT Mini Mocks and check detailed solutions after attempting.

👉 Quantifiers’ Ultimate DILR Book with 300+ Sets helps you practice and build speed.

📅 August: Full Syllabus Coverage

Area

Focus Topics/Activities

Quantitative Aptitude (QA)

Focus on Modern Math – Permutations & Combinations, Probability, Set Theory and finish revising all earlier topics.

DILR

Solve full sets every day; tackle mixed types of problems under time limits.

VARC

Solve 3 RC passages per day and full-length Verbal Ability (VA) sectionals.

Mock Tests

Take 1 full-length mock every 10 days. Analyze weak areas and revise accordingly.

Goal

Cover the entire syllabus in August and identify weak points. Ensure no major topic is left uncovered.

This month is dedicated to completing the syllabus and ensuring you’ve touched upon all the major topics. Focus on completing Modern Math and ensuring that you have a strong grasp on topics like Probability and Permutations & Combinations. Practice solving full-length mock tests and use them to identify areas needing improvement.

👉 Use Quantifiers’ Quantitative Aptitude Module-Wise Tests to revise Modern Math and catch up on missed areas.

📅 September: Speed, Strategy, and Smart Practice

Area

Focus Topics/Activities

Quantitative Aptitude (QA)

Solve mixed-topic practice tests. Focus on increasing speed without sacrificing accuracy.

DILR

Randomized practice of full sets with varying levels of difficulty.

VARC

Speed up RC solving (~6-8 minutes per passage). Focus on time management in each section.

Mock Tests

Take 1 mock every week. Work on strategies for each section: which to attempt first, how to manage time.

Goal

Focus on refining your strategy and increasing speed while maintaining accuracy.

September is your time to hone your strategies and start developing a more time-efficient approach to the exam. Work on tackling questions faster while ensuring you’re still answering correctly. Regular mocks will help you optimize the way you approach the sections and help identify the most effective strategies for time management.

👉 Use DILR Booster Test Series to build your strategy.

📅 October: Peak Mock Phase

Area

Focus Topics/Activities

Quantitative Aptitude (QA)

Focus on revising key formulas and shortcuts. Continue solving higher-level problems.

DILR

Solve complex sets and attempt at least one full sectional every day.

VARC

Revise RC strategies and vocabulary notes. Keep practicing full VA sections under exam conditions.

Mock Tests

Take 2 mocks per week. Focus on error analysis and making adjustments based on performance.

Goal

Build exam-day stamina and test-taking confidence. Analyze performance closely.

October should see you at your peak in terms of preparation. Mock tests become a critical part of your practice, with a focus on simulating real exam conditions. Analyze each mock test thoroughly to track mistakes and develop a strategy for the final few weeks before the exam.

📅 November: Final Touches

Area

Focus Topics/Activities

Quantitative Aptitude (QA)

Revise all formulae and focus on correcting common mistakes.

DILR

Light revision and selective practice.

VARC

Revise RC strategies. Go through key vocabulary notes and focus on accuracy.

Mock Tests

Take 2–3 mocks per week. Analyze them and maintain your confidence.

Goal

Ensure you’re mentally and physically ready for the exam.

In the final month, the goal is to stay calm and focused. Avoid overloading yourself with new concepts. Instead, focus on revision and keeping your mind sharp.

Continue taking mock tests to stay in practice and ensure you’re mentally prepared for the exam.
