2. CAT — The Umbrella Exam You Cannot Skip

CAT (Common Admission Test) is the most important MBA entrance exam in India — and for a very practical reason. CAT preparation covers almost the entire syllabus of every other MBA entrance exam. If you are preparing seriously for CAT, you are simultaneously preparing for XAT, SNAP, NMAT, CMAT, and more. This is why Sahil Sir calls it the umbrella exam — everything else sits under it.

CAT alone opens doors to all 21–22 IIMs, FMS Delhi, MDI Gurgaon, SPJIMR, and over 1,200 other MBA colleges across India. Registration typically opens around August 1 each year and closes by mid-September. The exam is held on the last Sunday of November. The fee is approximately ₹2,600–2,800.

✅ Sahil Sir’s Take on CAT

If you are giving just one exam, give CAT. If you are giving multiple exams, still give CAT first and build everything else around it. Your CAT preparation is your foundation — never compromise on it to prepare for secondary exams.

3. XAT — Must-Give for XLRI and Top Private B-Schools

XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test) is conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur every year on the first Sunday of January. It is the second most important MBA entrance exam after CAT, and Sahil Sir firmly puts it in the must-give category. XAT scores are accepted by over 800 colleges including XLRI Jamshedpur, XLRI Delhi, XIMB Bhubaneswar, IMT Ghaziabad, and IMI Delhi.

What makes XAT different from CAT is the Decision Making section — a unique component that tests managerial judgment and ethical decision-making. This section has no direct equivalent in CAT preparation, so dedicated practice of 2–3 weeks on Decision Making before XAT is essential. Registration opens around July and the fee is approximately ₹2,200.

⚠️ XAT-Specific Note

XAT is considered as tough as CAT — do not treat it as a lesser exam. Many students who score 99+ in CAT find XAT challenging because of Decision Making. Allocate specific preparation time for this section.

4. NMAT — Your Gateway to NMIMS Mumbai

NMAT (NMIMS Management Aptitude Test) is primarily for admission to NMIMS Mumbai and its campuses in Navi Mumbai and Bangalore. One important advantage: NMAT allows up to three attempts per cycle, and the best score is considered. This gives you a genuine safety net if you are not happy with your first attempt.

Registrations open around August 1 and the exam window runs from November to December. The fee is approximately ₹3,500–3,600 per attempt. One thing to keep in mind: the total MBA cost at NMIMS Mumbai can be around ₹30 lakh. So before spending on NMAT registration and preparation, make sure you are comfortable with this investment and genuinely want NMIMS as a target.

5. SNAP — Three Attempts for Symbiosis Colleges

SNAP (Symbiosis National Aptitude Test) is the gateway to 16 Symbiosis institutes, with the top targets being SIBM Pune, SCMHRD, and SIIB. SNAP is conducted in December across three different dates, and you can appear for all three. The best score among your attempts is used for shortlisting.

SNAP is generally considered a speed-based exam — questions are not as conceptually deep as CAT, but the time pressure is significant. If you are fast at solving straightforward problems and have strong vocabulary, SNAP tends to suit your profile well. The fee is approximately ₹2,250 per attempt. Registrations typically open in August and close in November.

Sahil Sir’s view on Symbiosis colleges: SIBM Pune is almost Tier-1, and SCMHRD is also a very strong college. If these are genuine targets for you, SNAP is worth giving. However, note that the total MBA fee at Symbiosis can also approach ₹25–30 lakh.

6. MICAT — The Hidden Gem for Marketing Students

MICAT is different from every other exam on this list. It is a secondary exam — meaning you cannot apply to MICA Ahmedabad using MICAT alone. You need a valid CAT or XAT score first, and then your MICAT score is used alongside it for shortlisting.

Why does MICA deserve special mention? Because MICA Ahmedabad is one of the best institutes in India for marketing and communication management. Some of the top marketing brands and companies that recruit at MICA do not even visit many IIMs. If you want a career specifically in marketing, MICA is genuinely one of the strongest options available.

✅ Sahil Sir’s Tip on MICAT

MICAT is conducted twice — MICAT-1 in December and MICAT-2 in February. From observation, students who make it into MICA tend to clear MICAT-1 more often. If you are serious about MICA, attempt MICAT-1 rather than waiting for MICAT-2. A CAT/XAT percentile of around 91–92 along with a good MICAT score typically qualifies for interview shortlists — though cutoffs do vary every year.

7. GMAT — For ISB and Global Programs

GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is the only exam on this list that is accepted globally. In the Indian context, it is most relevant for students targeting ISB Hyderabad, ISB Mohali, SP Jain Global, FORE School of Management, and IMI Delhi. GMAT can be taken year-round at authorised test centres and is considerably more expensive at approximately $275 (~₹22,000).

Sahil Sir’s recommendation: Give GMAT only if ISB or a global MBA program is a genuine goal. Do not add GMAT to your list just to have a backup — the cost, preparation style, and time commitment are significantly different from Indian exams. If ISB is your dream, however, GMAT is non-negotiable.

8. CMAT — A Strong Backup Exam

CMAT (Common Management Admission Test) is conducted by NTA and held in January or February. It is accepted by several good colleges including KJ Somaiya, PUMBA, and sometimes JBIMS depending on that year’s policy. The fee is approximately ₹2,500.

Sahil Sir recommends CMAT as a solid backup exam — particularly useful if CAT or XAT does not go as expected. The difficulty level is lower than CAT and it is more speed-based, so a well-prepared CAT aspirant typically finds CMAT manageable with minimal additional preparation.

9. Maharashtra CET — Essential for JBIMS Aspirants

Maharashtra CET (MAH MBA CET) is a state-level exam primarily for Maharashtra colleges. The top target through this exam is JBIMS Mumbai (Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies) — one of the best MBA institutes in India with a fee structure that is far more affordable than IIMs or private B-schools. Other top colleges include SIMSREE and Welingkar. The fee is just ₹1,000.

One important caution: for students from outside Maharashtra, getting into JBIMS through CET is extremely difficult. You typically need to be in the top 20–25 national ranks to get JBIMS as an out-of-state student. Maharashtra domicile students have a significant advantage here. If you are from Maharashtra and targeting JBIMS, this exam is absolutely must-give.

10. MAT — Optional but Widely Available

MAT (Management Aptitude Test) is conducted by AIMA four times a year — in February, May, September, and December. It is accepted primarily by Tier-3 and Tier-4 colleges. Earlier, JBIMS accepted MAT scores, but that is no longer the case. For most serious CAT aspirants targeting top B-schools, MAT is generally optional. It is only worth considering if you want to keep every door open as a safety option.

11. Which Exams Should YOU Give? Sahil Sir’s Recommendation

The right set of exams depends on your goals, your attempt number, and your willingness to invest in fees and preparation time. Here is how Sahil Sir categorises them:

Category Exams Who Should Give These
Must Give CAT, XAT Every MBA aspirant, no exceptions
Must Give (Niche) MICAT Students interested in marketing career / MICA Ahmedabad
Preference-Based NMAT, SNAP If you genuinely want NMIMS/Symbiosis colleges and are comfortable with ~₹30L fees
Situation-Specific Maharashtra CET Maharashtra domicile students targeting JBIMS or state colleges
Backup CMAT Students who want a safety net beyond CAT/XAT
Special Case GMAT ISB or global MBA aspirants only
Optional MAT Only if targeting Tier-3/4 colleges as absolute backup

⚠️ Important: Final Attempt vs First Attempt Strategy

If this is your last attempt and you must get admission this year — leave no stone unturned. Fill every relevant form. But if this is your first attempt, be selective. Spreading yourself thin across 7–8 exams can hurt your CAT preparation, which is what matters most.

12. Easy vs Difficult: How These Exams Compare

A common question is: which MBA entrance exam is easiest? The honest answer is that difficulty is relative — because most serious MBA aspirants appear for multiple exams simultaneously. If the same 3 lakh students give CAT and also give SNAP, the relative ranking remains similar. That said, the question style and skill requirements do differ.

Exam Style Best Suited For
CAT Concept-heavy, unpredictable Strong fundamentals, good accuracy
XAT Concept-heavy + Decision Making Strong readers, analytical thinkers
SNAP / NMAT / CMAT / MAH CET Speed-based, moderate difficulty Fast solvers, strong vocabulary
MICAT Aptitude + Creative/Psychometric Creative thinkers with good CAT base
GMAT Adaptive, concept-heavy ISB/Global MBA aspirants

✅ Key Insight from Sahil Sir

If speed is your strength and you struggle with very hard conceptual questions, exams like SNAP, NMAT, CMAT, and Maharashtra CET are likely to give you a better relative percentile. Use self-awareness to choose your portfolio of exams — not just prestige of the exam name.

14. Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Which MBA entrance exam should I give first?

Start your preparation with CAT. Since CAT covers almost the entire syllabus of all other MBA exams, your CAT preparation builds the foundation for XAT, SNAP, NMAT, and CMAT simultaneously. Once your CAT preparation is solid, allocating 2–3 weeks to exam-specific sections (like XAT Decision Making) is enough.

Q2. How many MBA entrance exams should I give in 2026?

For most aspirants, CAT + XAT is the minimum. Add MICAT if you are interested in marketing. Add SNAP or NMAT if you are comfortable with their fee structures and genuinely want those colleges. If it is your last attempt, fill all relevant forms. If it is your first attempt, stay focused and do not spread yourself too thin.

Q3. Is SNAP easier than CAT?

SNAP is a speed-based exam with lower conceptual depth compared to CAT. However, since many CAT aspirants also give SNAP, the relative competition remains high. A strong CAT preparation generally translates well to SNAP — you may just need to adjust your speed and not overthink questions.

Q4. Can I get into a good college without giving CAT?

Yes — through XAT (for XLRI and 800+ colleges), NMAT (for NMIMS), SNAP (for Symbiosis), GMAT (for ISB), or Maharashtra CET (for JBIMS). However, CAT covers the widest range of top colleges. Skipping CAT significantly limits your options, especially for IIMs, FMS, and MDI.

Q5. What is MICAT and who should give it?

MICAT is a secondary exam for MICA Ahmedabad — one of India’s best institutes for marketing. You must have a CAT or XAT score first, then apply for MICAT. A percentile of around 91–92 in CAT combined with a good MICAT score typically gets you an interview call. If you are serious about a marketing career, MICA is worth pursuing.

Q6. Should I give GMAT for Indian MBA colleges?

Only if ISB Hyderabad or global MBA programs are genuine targets. GMAT is expensive (~₹22,000) and requires a different preparation style. For most Indian B-school aspirants, CAT is the more efficient path. However, if you want ISB, GMAT is essential.

Q7. Is Maharashtra CET worth giving for students outside Maharashtra?

Only if you are targeting JBIMS — and in that case, be aware that out-of-state students need to be in the top 20–25 national ranks to get JBIMS. The domicile advantage for Maharashtra students is very significant. For students outside Maharashtra without a specific state college target, Maharashtra CET offers limited return on effort.
