General Category Seats in IIMs for MBA 2026: The Complete Guide

Quantifiers Research TeamApril 202612 min read

If you are a general category CAT aspirant, here is the first number you need to know: out of approximately 5,500 flagship PGP/MBA seats across all 21 IIMs, only 40.5% are available for general category candidates. That translates to roughly 2,200 seats — spread across 21 institutions, including the newest IIMs where batch sizes are still small.

Understanding exactly how many general seats exist, where they are, and what competition looks like is not just useful — it is the foundation of any serious IIM prep strategy. This blog breaks it all down, IIM by IIM, with the 2026 batch data.

1. How Reservation Works in IIMs

All IIMs, as centrally funded institutions, follow the Government of India’s reservation policy. The breakdown of reserved seats in every IIM batch is as follows:

CategoryReservation %Approx. Seats (per 100)
Scheduled Caste (SC)15%15 seats
Scheduled Tribe (ST)7.5%7–8 seats
OBC — Non-Creamy Layer27%27 seats
Economically Weaker Section (EWS)10%10 seats
General / Unreserved40.5%~40–41 seats

This means that for every 100 seats in an IIM, only about 40–41 are open to general category candidates on merit.

⚠️ EWS Is Not General Category

A common misconception: EWS seats are separate from general category seats. General category candidates who qualify as Economically Weaker Sections (annual family income below ₹8 lakh) can apply for EWS seats, but it does not expand the general category pool. The general unreserved seats remain at 40.5%.

2. Total Seats Across All 21 IIMs (2026)

The total flagship PGP/MBA intake across all IIMs is approximately 5,500 seats. Of these, roughly 2,200 seats are available for general category candidates. When specialised programmes like HRM, FABM, Business Analytics, and OSCM are included, total IIM intake goes up to approximately 7,000–7,500 seats.

3. General Category Seats in Old IIMs

The older IIMs tend to have larger batches and the highest CAT cutoffs for general category. Here is the IIM-wise breakdown:

✅ The IIM Lucknow Opportunity

IIM Lucknow has the highest PGP intake among all IIMs at 507+ seats, giving it approximately 205 general category seats — the most of any IIM. For general category aspirants targeting the old IIMs, Lucknow offers the most seats alongside Calcutta and Kozhikode.

4. General Category Seats in New IIMs

The newer IIMs — established post-2010 — have smaller batches but are steadily growing. Many are viable options for aspirants targeting the 85–97 percentile range in the general category.

IIM Udaipur375~15294–96%ile+
IIM Vizag287~11688–90%ile+

⚠️ New IIMs Are Not a Backup Plan

IIMs like Trichy, Udaipur, Kashipur, and Rohtak now have actual call cutoffs of 94–97 percentile for general category — comparable to IIM Kozhikode just a few years ago. For a general category candidate scoring 90–94 percentile, IIMs like Nagpur, Jammu, Amritsar, and Vizag deliver strong outcomes and growing placement records.

5. What the Competition Actually Looks Like

CAT sees approximately 3–3.5 lakh serious test-takers from the general category each year. Of these, roughly 3,000–4,000 score above 95 percentile. And there are only about 2,200 general category IIM seats in total.

📌 The Profile Factor for General Category

IIMs do not select purely on CAT percentile. Work experience, academic record, gender diversity, and non-engineering background all play a role. A general category candidate with 96 percentile + strong academics + 2–3 years of work experience can outperform a 98 percentile candidate with a weaker profile at several IIMs.

6. CAT Percentile Cutoffs for General Category

Qualifying cutoff = minimum to be eligible. Actual call cutoff = real percentile at which candidates receive interview calls. These are very different numbers. The table below shows actual call cutoffs with verified sectional figures.

⚠️ Section Cutoffs Can Eliminate You Even at High Overall Percentiles

You can score 98 percentile overall but still not get shortlisted if one section is below the cutoff. IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, and Indore all have strict section-wise cutoffs. A 70th percentile in VARC with a 99.5 overall will not get you a call from IIM A — all three sections must clear the threshold independently.

7. Strategy for General Category Aspirants

Set a Realistic Target Band — Not a Single Dream College

Most aspirants fixate on IIM A or B. With ~165 general category seats at IIM A and ~3,000+ candidates above 99.5 percentile, the probability mathematics are harsh. Build a target band: one reach (IIM A/B/C), two core targets (IIM L/I/K/M), and three realistic options (new IIMs in your percentile range).

Score All Three Sections — Not Just Your Strongest

Section cutoffs are where general category candidates most commonly get eliminated. VARC is the most common weak section for engineering candidates. On the Quant side, start with Arithmetic before Algebra — here is why →

Build Your Profile — Not Just Your CAT Score

For IIMs beyond Ahmedabad and Bangalore, profile matters enormously. Strong academics, meaningful work experience, and a non-engineering background can help a 96 percentile candidate beat a 98 percentile engineer with average grades. Analyse every mock the right way →

✅ The Quantifiers Approach: Percentile + Profile

At Quantifiers, we work with general category students on both dimensions — hitting the section-wise cutoffs in CAT and building a compelling profile for WAT-PI. A 97 percentile with a strong profile and excellent interview preparation consistently outperforms a 99 percentile candidate who walks in underprepared.

What percentage of IIM seats are for general category?

40.5% of seats in all IIMs are unreserved (general category). The remaining 59.5% is distributed as: SC 15%, ST 7.5%, OBC-NCL 27%, and EWS 10%.

Which IIM has the most general category seats?

IIM Lucknow at 507+ total PGP seats, giving it approximately 205 general category seats — the most of any IIM.

What CAT percentile does a general category student need for IIM Ahmedabad?

Qualifying cutoff is 95 percentile but actual calls go to candidates at 99.5 percentile or above. Sectional requirement is 85 percentile in each of VARC, DILR, and QA.

Can a general category student get into IIM with 90 percentile?

Yes — IIMs like Nagpur, Jammu, Vizag, and Bodhgaya have general category call cutoffs in the 88–92 percentile range. A strong academic profile and work experience improve shortlisting chances further.

Does gender diversity help general category candidates?

Yes. IIM Bangalore, Indore, Kozhikode, Rohtak, and several new IIMs actively reward gender diversity, meaning female general category candidates may receive calls at slightly lower percentiles than male candidates.

How many IIMs should I apply to as a general category candidate?

IIMs shortlist you based on your score and profile — there’s no separate application per IIM (the CAT form covers all). Build a realistic band of 1 reach, 2 core targets, and 3–4 safe options.
