IIM Lucknow Selection Criteria

IIM Lucknow Selection Criteria 2026 — The Toughest Sectional Cutoffs, a Two-Stage Formula & Three Programmes Decoded

IIM Lucknow’s admission process is two-staged and covers three distinct programmes — MBA, MBA-ABM, and MBA-SM — each with its own cutoffs and composite formula. The General category needs 85 in every CAT section, the highest sectional bar of any IIM in this series. CAT weight drops from 60% at shortlisting to 30% in the final score, while PI jumps to 40% — the largest shift between stages of any IIM covered here. Here’s the complete process, decoded.

IIM Lucknow MBA 2026–28 at a glance: Three programmes: MBA, MBA-ABM, MBA-SM. Two stages: WAT-PI shortlist (100-point composite, CAT 60%) → Final Selection (100-point composite, PI 40%). General category sectional cutoff: 85 in VARC, DILR, and QA — the highest in the series. Overall cutoff: 90 for MBA, 85 for MBA-ABM and MBA-SM. Work experience formula: peaks at 26 months for MBA, carries no weight in MBA-ABM, and has a separate formula for MBA-SM (peaks beyond 44 months). PI minimum qualifying score: 12 out of 40 — fall below this and you exit the merit list regardless of everything else.

1. What Makes the IIM Lucknow Selection Criteria Different

Three things set IIM Lucknow apart from every IIM in this series. First, the sectional cutoffs for the General category sit at 85 in every section — VARC, DILR, and QA — higher than any other IIM covered here. Missing even one section by a single percentile point eliminates a candidate regardless of overall score. Second, IIM Lucknow runs three distinct programmes (MBA, MBA-ABM, MBA-SM) each with their own cutoffs and composite formulas — not just one process. Third, the weight of CAT in the final score drops from 60% to 30% between Stage 1 and Stage 2, while PI jumps from 0 to 40% — the most dramatic stage-to-stage reweighting of any IIM in this series.

2. IIM Lucknow Eligibility Criteria 2026

  • A bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA (45% for SC/ST/PwD candidates) from a recognised university.
  • A valid CAT 2025 score — mandatory for all three programmes.
  • Final-year students may apply, provided all degree requirements are completed by June 30, 2026.
  • Work experience entered during CAT 2025 registration is treated as final and will be verified — it cannot be updated or corrected post-registration.
  • MBA-SM additional requirement: minimum 24 months of full-time work experience as of July 31, 2025.
  • Reservation policies follow Government of India norms.

⚠ Work Experience Is Locked at CAT Registration — Cannot Be Changed Later

Whatever work experience details you enter when registering for CAT 2025 are the figures IIM Lucknow will use throughout the entire admission process — shortlisting, verification, and final scoring. There is no mechanism to update or correct them afterwards. If they don’t match your supporting documents at verification, you risk disqualification. Double-check every employer, designation, start/end date, and month count before submitting your CAT form.

3. IIM Lucknow CAT Cutoffs 2026 — Three Programmes, Two Hurdles

Stage 1 has two sequential hurdles: first clear the minimum CAT sectional and overall cutoffs (Stage 1a), then get shortlisted on the composite score (Stage 1b). The cutoffs below are for Stage 1a — clearing them makes you eligible for composite-score ranking, not for a WAT-PI call directly.

Table 1 — Stage 1a: Minimum CAT Cutoffs by Programme and Category

Category MBA MBA-ABM MBA-SM
VARC DILR QA Total VARC DILR QA Total VARC DILR QA Total
General 85 85 85 90 80 80 80 85 80 80 80 85
EWS 77 77 77 82 72 72 72 77 72 72 72 77
NC-OBC 77 77 77 82 72 72 72 77 72 72 72 77
SC 55 55 55 65 55 55 55 65 55 55 55 60
ST 50 50 50 60 50 50 50 55 50 50 50 55
PwD 50 50 50 60 50 50 50 55 50 50 50 55
These are minimum eligibility cutoffs for Stage 1a only. The actual WAT-PI call is determined by the composite score at Stage 1b — candidates who clear Stage 1a are ranked by composite score, and only the top-ranked candidates per category per programme receive a WAT-PI call. Clearing the cutoff guarantees nothing beyond eligibility.

💡 General Category MBA Needs 85 in Every Section — The Highest Sectional Bar in This Series

Across all IIMs covered in this series, no other institute sets a General-category sectional cutoff as high as IIM Lucknow’s 85 in each section for MBA. IIM Kashipur, Raipur, Ranchi, and Trichy set General sectionals at 75; IIM Sambalpur requires only a positive score; IIM Rohtak has no sectional cutoffs at all. At 85, IIM Lucknow’s sectional gate is 10 points higher than the next most demanding set. A candidate with a 99 overall but 84 in DILR doesn’t make it past Stage 1a — no matter what happens next.

4. Stage 1: The WAT-PI Shortlist Composite Score

Candidates who clear Stage 1a are ranked on a 100-point composite. The top-ranked candidates per category per programme receive WAT-PI calls. This composite is the same structure for all three programmes — but with different weightages for the diversity and work experience components.

Table 2 — Stage 1b: Composite Score Weightage by Programme (Out of 100)

Component MBA MBA-ABM MBA-SM Scoring Method
CAT Score (CS) 60 60 60 (Candidate’s CAT score ÷ Highest CAT score in 2025) × 60
Class XII Marks (12M) 10 10 10 Max(P, 80) − 80 ÷ 20 × 10, where P = candidate’s normalised Class XII percentile across CAT applicants’ pooled data by board and discipline (5 years)
Graduation Marks (GM) 10 10 10 Normalised by academic discipline: Engineering / Science / Commerce / Arts / Others
Work Experience (WE) 10 0 10 See Table 3 for formulas — different for MBA and MBA-SM; zero for MBA-ABM
Academic Diversity (DFa) 5 20* 5 MBA/MBA-SM: Non-engineering UG = 5 pts. MBA-ABM: Eligible agriculture/life science discipline = 20 pts.
Gender Diversity (DFb) 5 5* 5 Female candidates = 5 pts. Male = 0.
Total 100 100 100
*For MBA-ABM, the combined maximum for DFa + DFb cannot exceed 20 points. Candidates who qualify for the 20-point agricultural academic diversity cannot additionally claim the 5-point gender diversity separately beyond this cap.

💡 CAT Carries 60% at Stage 1 — But This Changes Completely at Stage 2

The Stage 1 composite is heavily CAT-driven at 60%. But this is only the shortlisting score — the formula that determines who gets a WAT-PI call. Once in the WAT-PI room, Stage 2 recalculates everything with a completely different set of weights. CAT drops to 30%, PI jumps to 40%, and WAT enters at 10%. Candidates who prepare only for CAT and neglect PI performance are targeting the wrong bottleneck for IIM Lucknow specifically — the exam gets you in the room, but the interview is what gets you the offer.

5. Work Experience Formula — Different for Every Programme

Table 3 — Work Experience Scoring by Programme (Out of 10 Points in Stage 1)

Programme Formula Peak Score Peak at
MBA If x > 6 months: WE = min{(x − 6) × 0.50, 10}
If x ≤ 6 months: WE = 0
10 26 months (14 months × 0.5 × 2 = 10; any month ≥ 26 gives full 10)
MBA-ABM WE = 0 (not counted)
MBA-SM If x > 24 months: WE = min{(x − 24) × 0.50, 10}
If x ≤ 24 months: WE = 0 (ineligible below 24 months)
10 44 months (20 months × 0.5 = 10; any month ≥ 44 gives full 10)
x = number of completed months of full-time post-graduation work experience as of July 31, 2025. Only full-time, remunerative, post-graduation employment counts. Part-time, internship, training, apprenticeship, articleship, project-based, and pre-graduation experience are excluded entirely. The work-experience data used is what was entered at CAT 2025 registration — this cannot be changed.

💡 IIM Lucknow’s Work-Ex Curve Doesn’t Decline — It Caps and Stays There

Most IIMs in this series have work-experience curves that peak and then drop — IIM Kashipur hits zero past 36 months, IIM Sambalpur hits zero past 48 months, IIM Jammu hits zero past 60 months. IIM Lucknow’s formula doesn’t decline: once you cross the peak month (26 for MBA, 44 for MBA-SM), you stay at the maximum 10 marks. Candidates with 3, 4, or 5+ years of experience are not penalised for having more experience. The formula rewards relevance and continuity, not recency alone.

6. Academic Diversity and Gender Diversity

Both components carry weight at Stage 1 and Stage 2, but with different magnitudes.

  • Academic Diversity (DFa) — MBA and MBA-SM: 5 points for candidates with a non-engineering bachelor’s degree. Engineering graduates score 0. This is a flat binary bonus — not a scale.
  • Academic Diversity (DFa) — MBA-ABM: Up to 20 points for candidates from specific agriculture, life sciences, animal sciences, food/agricultural engineering, environmental sciences, or rural studies disciplines (see Table 4 below). This is the largest academic-background bonus in the entire series.
  • Gender Diversity (DFb): 5 points for female candidates across all three programmes. 0 for male candidates.

Table 4 — MBA-ABM: Academic Disciplines Eligible for 20-Point Diversity Score

Category Eligible Disciplines
Agriculture Agriculture, Agronomy, Soil Science, Agricultural Biochemistry, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Extension, Plant Breeding & Genetics, Entomology, Plant Pathology
Life Sciences Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biotechnology Engineering, Botany, Home Science, Life Science, Zoology
Animal Sciences Veterinary Science, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Dairy Science
Food & Agricultural Engineering Agricultural Engineering, Dairy Technology, Food Technology, Food Technology & Management
Environmental Sciences Forestry, Horticulture
Rural Studies Rural Studies, Rural Sociology, Rural Cooperatives, Rural Banking
Candidates from these disciplines can earn up to 20 points at Stage 1 for MBA-ABM — the largest single academic diversity bonus in any IIM’s formula in this series. The DFa + DFb combined cap for MBA-ABM is 20 marks, so a female candidate from an eligible discipline receives 20 points total (not 20 + 5 = 25).

7. Stage 2: The Final Selection Score — What Changes After WAT-PI

Once the WAT and PI are complete, IIM Lucknow recalculates the composite with an entirely different set of weights. This is the score that determines the final merit list and admission offers.

Table 5 — Stage 2: Final Selection Weightage by Programme (Out of 100)

Component MBA & MBA-SM MBA-ABM
CAT Score 30 35
Class XII Marks 5 5
Graduation Marks 5 5
Work Experience 5 0 (N/A)
Diversity (DFa + DFb combined) 5 5
Writing Ability Test (WAT) 10 10
Personal Interview (PI) 40 40
Total 100 100
PI carries 40 marks — the highest PI weight of any IIM in this series by raw count, equal to IIM Jammu’s 30% only by comparison on a percentage basis. Candidates who score below 12 out of 40 in the PI are automatically excluded from the final merit list — this PI floor is non-negotiable.

⚠ Score Below 12 Out of 40 in PI = Excluded From the Merit List

IIM Lucknow publishes a hard minimum PI score: 12 out of 40. Falling below this threshold — regardless of CAT score, WAT performance, academics, or work experience — removes you from the final merit list entirely. This is a stricter PI gate than IIM Udaipur’s unpublished minimum. Prepare for the PI as if it’s a binary qualifier as much as a scoring component — because at IIM Lucknow, it is.

Table 6 — What Changes Between Stage 1 and Stage 2

Component Stage 1 Weight (MBA) Stage 2 Weight (MBA) Change
CAT Score 60 30 Halved
Class XII + Graduation 20 10 Halved
Work Experience 10 5 Halved
Diversity (DFa + DFb) 10 5 Halved
WAT 0 (not yet) 10 New component
PI 0 (not yet) 40 New, dominant component
Every component from Stage 1 is effectively halved in Stage 2, with the freed-up weight going entirely to WAT (10%) and PI (40%). This is the clearest signal in IIM Lucknow’s process about where final decisions are actually made.

8. MBA-ABM — The Agricultural Diversity Programme

MBA in Agribusiness Management is IIM Lucknow’s specialised programme for candidates from agriculture, life sciences, and allied disciplines. Three things make it structurally different from the flagship MBA:

  • Lower cutoffs: 80 sectional and 85 overall for General category (vs 85 sectional and 90 overall for MBA).
  • 20-point academic diversity bonus: Eligible discipline candidates (Table 4) receive 20 points in Stage 1 — the largest single background bonus in the entire IIM series. This can compensate for a CAT score that’s 3–4 percentile points lower than a non-eligible peer.
  • No work experience weight: Work experience doesn’t factor into either Stage 1 or Stage 2 for MBA-ABM. The formula is purely CAT, academics, WAT, and PI.

⚠ MBA-ABM Requires a Separate Application Form

MBA-ABM applications require submitting a separate programme-specific form after CAT results are declared. Missing this form deadline means automatic exclusion from MBA-ABM consideration — regardless of your CAT score or academic background. If you’re interested in MBA-ABM, track IIM Lucknow’s post-CAT announcement calendar carefully.

9. MBA-SM — The Work-Experience-First Programme

MBA in Sustainability Management is IIM Lucknow’s programme for candidates with meaningful professional experience. Its structural differences from the flagship MBA:

  • 24-month minimum work experience: Mandatory eligibility requirement. Candidates without 24 completed months of full-time post-graduation experience as of July 31, 2025 are ineligible regardless of CAT score.
  • Lower cutoffs: Same as MBA-ABM — 80 sectional and 85 overall for General category.
  • Different work-experience formula: Rather than starting at 6 months (like MBA), the MBA-SM formula starts at 24 months and uses the same 0.5-per-month rate — meaning the peak of 10 marks is reached at 44 months (20 months above the starting point of 24).
  • Separate application form required: Like MBA-ABM, MBA-SM requires submitting a programme-specific form post-CAT results.

10. IIM Lucknow Selection Criteria vs the Other IIMs

Table 7 — IIM Lucknow vs the Other IIMs

IIM Sectional Cutoff (Gen) Stage 1 — CAT Final — CAT Final — PI WAT?
Lucknow (MBA) 85 each 60% 30% 40% Yes — 10%
Jammu 72 each 42% 30% No
Sirmaur 65 each 35% 20% No (CAP PI only)
Sambalpur None (positive score only) 40% 25% No
Nagpur None (positive score only) 45% 25% (PI + Extempore) No
Udaipur 75 each 55% 25% No
Trichy 75 each 52% 20% No
Kashipur 75 each (JAP) 41% 25% No
Ranchi 75 each (JAP) 65% 12.5% Yes — 2.5%
Mumbai 75–80 60% 20% No

💡 IIM Lucknow: Toughest Entry Gate, Biggest PI Weight, Only Major IIM With a Two-Stage Formula Shift

Three records in one process. The 85-sectional cutoff is the highest entry bar in the series. The 40% PI weight in the final score is the highest PI weighting in the series (IIM Jammu is second at 30%). And the CAT-weight shift from 60% at Stage 1 to 30% at Stage 2 is the largest formula change between stages of any IIM covered here. IIM Lucknow is uniquely designed to reward candidates who are balanced across CAT, academics, and interview performance — not dominant in just one dimension.

11. What a Strong IIM Lucknow Profile Looks Like in 2026

  • Hit 85 in every section — not just the overall. The 85-sectional requirement is absolute. A 99 overall with 84 in DILR is rejected at Stage 1a. Balance across all three sections is non-negotiable at IIM Lucknow in a way that’s unique in this series.
  • Target well above 90 overall for MBA. Clearing 90 only makes you eligible for composite-score ranking. The actual WAT-PI call goes to the top-ranked composites — and with academics, work experience, and diversity all contributing, 90 overall may not be enough in a competitive pool.
  • Treat the PI as 40% of your admission — because it is. IIM Lucknow’s PI is the single largest final-score component in the series. Failing to clear 12 out of 40 removes you from the merit list. Prepare with the same intensity you gave CAT.
  • Prepare for the WAT separately. At 10% of the final score, the Writing Ability Test contributes as much as all academic performance combined. Practice structured, timed writing on current affairs, management, and policy topics.
  • For MBA-ABM: If your UG is in agriculture, life sciences, veterinary science, or any of the disciplines in Table 4, the 20-point diversity bonus is worth a 3–4 percentile advantage in composite score. Apply even if your CAT score is slightly below what you’d need for the flagship MBA.
  • For MBA-SM: Confirm your work experience crosses 24 months by July 31, 2025, and that it’s verifiable with proper documentation. The MBA-SM formula rewards longer tenures — 44 months earns the full 10 marks, and unlike most IIMs, there’s no declining penalty beyond the peak.
  • Don’t update work experience after CAT registration. Whatever is entered at registration is final. Verify the month count, employer names, and date ranges match your documents exactly before submitting.

Since IIM Lucknow demands balance — 85 across all three CAT sections, strong academics, and a 40% PI — the prep strategy has to be multi-dimensional from the start. Start with free CAT study material, build section-wise consistency with the Daily Targets on the Quantifiers homepage, and benchmark your sectional and overall percentile on the TruCAT free mock series well before results day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the IIM Lucknow selection criteria for 2026?

IIM Lucknow runs a two-stage process across three programmes: Stage 1 uses a 100-point composite (CAT 60% + academics 20% + work-ex 10% + diversity 10%) to generate the WAT-PI shortlist. Stage 2 recalculates the composite with completely different weights (PI 40% + CAT 30% + WAT 10% + academics 10% + diversity and work-ex 5% each) to produce the final merit list.

What is the CAT cutoff for IIM Lucknow 2026?

For MBA: General category needs 85 in VARC, 85 in DILR, 85 in QA, and 90 overall. For MBA-ABM and MBA-SM: 80 in each section and 85 overall for General. EWS/NC-OBC needs 77 sectional and 82 overall for MBA. SC needs 55 sectional and 65 overall.

What is the minimum PI score required at IIM Lucknow?

12 out of 40. Candidates who score below this in the Personal Interview are automatically excluded from the final merit list, regardless of their CAT score, WAT performance, or academic profile.

Does IIM Lucknow have a WAT?

Yes — Writing Ability Test (WAT) carries 10% of the final Stage 2 score across all three programmes. It’s not present in Stage 1 (shortlisting) but enters the formula at Stage 2 (final selection).

What is the IIM Lucknow MBA-ABM programme?

MBA in Agribusiness Management — a specialised programme for candidates from agriculture, life sciences, animal sciences, food technology, environmental sciences, and rural studies disciplines. These backgrounds earn a 20-point academic diversity bonus at Stage 1, the largest background bonus in the IIM series. Work experience carries no weight in MBA-ABM.

What is the work experience requirement for MBA-SM at IIM Lucknow?

Minimum 24 months of full-time, post-graduation work experience as of July 31, 2025 is mandatory for MBA-SM eligibility. The work-experience scoring formula for MBA-SM starts counting from 24 months (not 6 months like MBA) and reaches maximum marks at 44 completed months.

Can I change my work experience details after CAT registration?

No. Work experience entered at CAT 2025 registration is treated as final by IIM Lucknow and used throughout the entire admission process. It cannot be updated or corrected post-registration. Any mismatch with documents at verification can lead to disqualification.
