Complete List of IIMs in India 2026 — Fees, Packages, Seats & How to Actually Apply to Each

Most CAT aspirants can name five or six IIMs off the top of their head. The full list of IIMs in India runs to 22 — and each one follows one of four completely different application journeys after your CAT score comes in. Get even one of those journeys wrong and a strong percentile won’t save you. Here’s the complete picture, from the Quantifiers team.

Quick answer: This complete list of IIMs in India covers 22 institutes, split roughly into 6 established institutes and 16 newer/baby IIMs, with total flagship MBA fees ranging from about ₹17 lakh to ₹27.5 lakh and average packages from roughly ₹13 LPA to ₹35.5 LPA. Crucially, they don’t all admit you the same way: 6 IIMs auto-shortlist you directly from your CAT registration, 4 run a shared Joint Admission Process (JAP), 3 run a Common Admission Process (CAP), and the rest — including IIM Mumbai, Rohtak, Amritsar, Visakhapatnam, and Nagpur — require you to fill a completely separate, institute-specific form after results. Missing that separate form removes the IIM from your list, regardless of your percentile.

1. The Complete List of IIMs in India — Grouped by Generation

The full list of IIMs in India spans three broad generations, each with a distinct application journey attached to it.

Table 1 — All 22 IIMs in India, Grouped

Group IIMs
Established IIMs (6) Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Indore, Kozhikode
New-Generation IIMs Shillong, Mumbai, Rohtak, Udaipur, Trichy (Tiruchirappalli), Kashipur, Ranchi, Raipur
Baby IIMs Amritsar, Nagpur, Bodh Gaya, Sirmaur, Jammu, Sambalpur, Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Guwahati
That’s 22 IIMs in total across India — 6 established, 8 new-generation, and 8 baby IIMs — each spread across a different state, and each following one of four distinct application processes covered in Section 4.

2. Fees vs Average Package — Established IIMs

The oldest IIMs also carry the highest price tags — but a higher fee doesn’t automatically mean a better return, as the ROI ratio below shows.

Table 2 — Established IIMs: Fees, Packages & ROI

IIM State Total Fee Avg. Package ROI Ratio
Ahmedabad Gujarat ₹27.50 L ₹35.50 LPA 1.29x
Bangalore Karnataka ₹26.30 L ₹34.88 LPA 1.33x
Calcutta West Bengal ₹27.00 L ₹34.23 LPA 1.27x
Mumbai Maharashtra ₹21.00 L ₹33.84 LPA* 1.61x
Lucknow Uttar Pradesh ₹20.75 L ₹32.30 LPA 1.56x
Indore Madhya Pradesh ₹21.15 L ₹29.57 LPA 1.40x
Kozhikode Kerala ₹23.50 L ₹28.05 LPA 1.19x
Shillong Meghalaya ₹26.18 L ₹26.44 LPA 1.01x
*IIM Mumbai’s average package figure reflects the top-50% batch cohort rather than the full batch — treat it as directionally useful, not a precise like-for-like comparison against the other rows. ROI Ratio = Average Package ÷ Total Fee; a higher number means a faster payback on your fee investment. IIM Mumbai’s 1.61x is the standout here — a meaningfully lower fee than Ahmedabad or Calcutta paired with a package not far behind them.

3. Fees vs Average Package — New & Baby IIMs

Fees vary nearly 3x across the newer IIMs, but that variation doesn’t track cleanly with placement outcomes — some of the lower-fee institutes actually post better ROI than pricier ones in the same tier.

Table 3 — New & Baby IIMs: Fees, Packages & ROI

IIM State Total Fee Avg. Package ROI Ratio
Tiruchirappalli Tamil Nadu ₹21.00 L ₹19.27 LPA 0.92x
Raipur Chhattisgarh ₹20.00 L ₹20.70 LPA 1.04x
Ranchi Jharkhand ₹19.20 L ₹19.29 LPA 1.00x
Rohtak Haryana ₹17.90 L ₹18.73 LPA 1.05x
Amritsar Punjab ₹21.50 L ₹19.73 LPA* 0.92x
Udaipur Rajasthan ₹22.30 L ₹17.50 LPA 0.78x
Nagpur Maharashtra ₹21.50 L ₹18.07 LPA 0.84x
Kashipur Uttarakhand ₹17.30 L ₹14.95 LPA 0.86x
Sambalpur Odisha ₹21.00 L ₹15.65 LPA 0.75x
Jammu Jammu & Kashmir ₹20.73 L ₹15.48 LPA 0.75x
Visakhapatnam Andhra Pradesh ₹20.51 L ₹16.40 LPA 0.80x
Sirmaur Himachal Pradesh ₹20.00 L ₹13.30 LPA 0.67x
Bodh Gaya Bihar ₹17.96 L ₹13.00 LPA 0.72x
*IIM Amritsar’s average package figure reflects the top-25% batch cohort. Small variations exist across different reporting periods for these newer institutes — always verify current fee and placement figures on each IIM’s own official website before applying, since these numbers shift with each admission cycle.

💡 Fee Isn’t a Reliable Proxy for Outcome in This Tier

Look closely at Rohtak (₹17.90L fee, 1.05x ROI) against Udaipur (₹22.30L fee, 0.78x ROI) — a meaningfully lower fee paired with a better return. Among new and baby IIMs specifically, don’t assume a higher price tag signals a better placement outcome. Check the actual ROI ratio, not just the headline fee, before ranking your preferences.

4. The Application Trap — “CAT Form” Doesn’t Mean “All IIM Forms”

This is the single most consequential thing to understand about the full list of IIMs in India, and it’s the detail that trips up otherwise well-prepared candidates every single year: submitting your CAT registration does not automatically apply you to every IIM. Each institute falls into one of three buckets — always cross-check the current grouping on iimcat.ac.in and each IIM’s own site, since institutes occasionally shift between groups from one cycle to the next.

  • Green — Automatic. Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Indore, and Kozhikode consider you directly from your CAT registration — no extra form required.
  • Amber — One Common Form. Covered once you complete the JAP form (Raipur, Kashipur, Ranchi, Trichy) or the CAP form (Bodh Gaya, Sirmaur, Jammu) after results are out.
  • Red — Don’t Miss This Form. Mumbai (free), Rohtak (₹3,095), Amritsar (₹1,000), Visakhapatnam (₹1,000), and Nagpur each require a separate, institute-specific form. IIM Udaipur and IIM Sambalpur have also exited the CAP process for the 2026–28 cycle and now run fully independent shortlisting, WAT, and PI — treat them as “red” institutes too, and verify their current process directly on their official sites.

⚠ A Missed Form Removes That IIM — Regardless of Your Percentile

This is worth repeating plainly: if an IIM falls in the “red” category and you don’t fill its separate form by its own deadline, that institute drops off your list entirely — a 99.5 percentile changes nothing at that point. Rule of thumb: if an IIM isn’t one of the six auto-shortlisting institutes and isn’t on the JAP or CAP list, assume it needs a separate form, and go verify on its official website.

5. JAP vs CAP 2026 — What’s the Actual Difference

JAP and CAP both simplify the process by covering multiple IIMs with a single form — but they’re run differently, and it’s worth knowing exactly how.

Table 4 — JAP 2026 vs CAP 2026

Parameter JAP 2026 CAP 2026
Meaning Joint Admission Process — one form covers 4 IIMs Common Admission Process — one form, one shortlisting round
Participating IIMs Raipur, Kashipur, Ranchi, Tiruchirappalli Bodh Gaya, Sirmaur, Jammu (down from 8–9 institutes in earlier cycles)
Coordinating Institute IIM Raipur Rotates among participating IIMs — IIM Jammu’s portal for 2026
Application Fee No registration fee Nominal fee (~₹1,000, non-refundable)
Timeline Opens post-CAT result; PI cities chosen within the form Expression of Interest Stage I → shortlist → Stage II offline PI
Interview Mechanism Single PI, shared across all 4 institutes’ merit lists Single PI/WAT stage feeds each institute’s own separate merit list
The CAP group has shrunk over recent cycles as more institutes have moved toward independent processes — always confirm the current participating list before assuming an institute you remember being on CAP still is.

6. Historical Conversion Percentiles — Category-Wise Reference

Your CAT percentile is only half the application battle across this full list of IIMs in India — knowing the historical percentile at which candidates in your category actually converted gives a far more realistic picture than the overall cutoff alone.

Table 5 — Lowest Historical Conversion Percentile, Category-Wise

IIM General EWS NC-OBC SC ST PwD
Ahmedabad 90.98 97.3 77.53 85.39 73.14 73.25
Bangalore 95.45 91.03 81.7 73.04 76.33
Lucknow 91.02 90.13 86.2 67.8 60.3 60.16
Indore 92.43 92.14 81.26 64.71 49.25 63.68
Kozhikode 91.03 82.26 75.2 67.8 55.17 56.52
Shillong 98.45 98.36 98.45 83.71 69.67 65.18
Udaipur 95.26 86.43 81.2 70.76 43.09 70.63
Trichy 95.01 81.63 81.04 66.16 51.04 72.68
Kashipur 94 77.37 77.33 60.76 40.18 40.01
Ranchi 94 77 77 60 40 40
Rohtak 97 93.04 83.19 63.61 50 11
Jammu 90.06 78.36 78.44 40 20 49.91
Nagpur 94 77.01 77 60.02 40.18 40.01
Vizag 82.03 73.22 72.99 50.02 40.09 41.34
Amritsar 88.37 88.12 79.63 60.94 41.38
Sambalpur 85.01 80 75.01 55.08 42.48 41.1
Sirmaur 95 81.02 77.01 66.06 42.15 43.29
These are reference conversion percentiles from historical cycles — the lowest percentile at which candidates in that category converted — and are NOT a guarantee of future cutoffs. Notice how sharply category-wise figures diverge from the General column at several institutes; relying on an overall cutoff figure alone can badly misjudge your realistic chances if you’re applying under a reserved category.

7. Seat Matrix — 2026–28 Batch

A bigger batch means more seats across every category at that institute — it doesn’t automatically mean an easier call, since a larger IIM also typically draws a proportionally larger applicant pool.

Table 6 — Flagship MBA/PGP Seats, 2026–28 Batch

IIM Seats IIM Seats
Lucknow 583 Kashipur 311
Bangalore 525 Mumbai (flagship) 309
Tiruchirappalli 502 Raipur 340
Kozhikode 495 Jammu / Sirmaur 290 / 260
Indore 487 Amritsar 260
Calcutta 479 Nagpur ~240
Ahmedabad ~415 Ranchi ~170
Shillong 403 Bodh Gaya 120–180
Udaipur 366* Sambalpur 308
Rohtak ~350 Visakhapatnam 347
*IIM Udaipur’s seat count includes 4 international seats outside the domestic category matrix. These figures cover flagship MBA/PGP programmes only — several IIMs also run separate business-analytics or HR cohorts not reflected here. IIM Guwahati admitted 52 of a planned 70 seats for 2026 and has not released a category-wise matrix as of this writing.

8. The 7-Step Application Checklist

One missed form can cost more than a missed sectional cutoff. Here’s the full sequence, start to finish.

  • 1. CAT Registration — August–September 2026. Covers your base eligibility across all IIMs.
  • 2. Separate IIM Forms — Mumbai, Rohtak, Amritsar, Vizag, Nagpur, filed post-CAT but before each institute’s own deadline.
  • 3. CAT Exam — Last Sunday of November 2026 (tentative).
  • 4. JAP / CAP Forms — One form each for the JAP-4 and CAP-3 IIM groups, filed after results.
  • 5. Shortlists Released — Institute-wise, based on CAT score, academics, and diversity factors.
  • 6. PI / WAT / Other Stages — City-wise interview rounds; JAP and CAP each run one shared interview covering their respective institute groups.
  • 7. Final Converts — Offer, waitlist movement, and acceptance-fee deadlines.

⚠ Steps 2 and 4 Are Not Auto-Filled by Your CAT Registration

Separate IIM forms and JAP/CAP forms are deadline-driven and require action from you specifically — they don’t happen automatically just because you registered for CAT. A missed form at either of these steps removes that IIM from your list entirely, no matter your eventual percentile.

9. From This List of IIMs in India, Which Ones Should You Actually Apply To?

Your realistic application list should shift meaningfully based on where your CAT percentile is likely to land — here’s a working framework by band.

Table 7 — Strategic Application Guide by Percentile Band

Percentile Band Application Strategy
99.5+ percentile Apply to all 6 established IIMs (auto-considered), plus Shillong (auto) and the Mumbai separate form (free)
98 – 99.5 percentile Selectively target established IIMs based on your category’s historical conversion range, file Mumbai’s separate form, and prioritise the JAP-4 (Raipur, Kashipur, Ranchi, Trichy) as a genuine safety net
95 – 98 percentile Make JAP-4 and CAP-3 your primary targets, and file every separate-form IIM you’re eligible for — Rohtak, Amritsar, Vizag, Nagpur
Below 95 percentile Widen the net — every eligible form matters. Check your category’s historical cutoff range on every institute, don’t skip the low-fee, high-ROI new/baby IIMs, and invest heavily in strengthening your academics and work-experience narrative for composite-score institutes
This is a directional application-strategy framework built on historical and reference data — not a guarantee of admission at any percentile band. Category, academics, work experience, and interview performance all factor into final conversion at every single IIM, established or new. Frequently Asked Questions

How many IIMs are there in the list of IIMs in India?

There are 22 IIMs in India — 6 established institutes (Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Indore, Kozhikode) and 16 newer and baby IIMs spread across various states.

Does registering for CAT automatically apply me to every IIM?

No. Only 6 established IIMs auto-shortlist from your CAT registration. The rest require a JAP form, a CAP form, or a completely separate institute-specific form — missing the right one removes that IIM from your list regardless of your percentile.

What’s the difference between JAP and CAP?

JAP (Joint Admission Process) covers 4 IIMs — Raipur, Kashipur, Ranchi, and Trichy — through IIM Raipur with no registration fee. CAP (Common Admission Process) covers 3 IIMs — Bodh Gaya, Sirmaur, and Jammu — with a nominal fee, and each institute maintains its own separate merit list even though the PI/WAT stage is shared.

Which IIMs require a separate application form?

IIM Mumbai, Rohtak, Amritsar, Visakhapatnam, and Nagpur all require separate, institute-specific forms filed after your CAT result. IIM Udaipur and IIM Sambalpur have also moved to independent processes for the 2026–28 cycle.

What’s the fee range across all IIMs?

Total flagship MBA fees range from roughly ₹17 lakh at the lower end (Kashipur, Bodh Gaya) to about ₹27.5 lakh at IIM Ahmedabad, the highest among established institutes.

Does a higher IIM fee guarantee a better placement package?

No. Among newer and baby IIMs especially, ROI (average package divided by fee) doesn’t track cleanly with the fee itself — some lower-fee institutes post a better return than pricier ones in the same tier.
