XAT 2027 preparation plan

XAT 2027 Preparation Plan: A 90-Day Strategy to the 3 January Exam

XAT 2027 is on Sunday, 3 January 2027, and today is 6 October. That gives you exactly 90 days, counting today as Day 1 and exam day as Day 90. This XAT 2027 preparation plan splits them into four phases, built around the one section no other MBA paper has in quite the same form: Decision Making, plus a skipping penalty that changes how you should attempt the paper.

Quick answer: A workable XAT 2027 preparation plan has four phases. Days 1–30 build fundamentals and a diagnostic baseline. Days 31–60 raise speed with timed sectional sets. Days 61–85 are a mock-heavy sprint. Days 86–89 are a light taper. Day 1 is 6 October 2026, Day 89 is 2 January 2027, and the exam is on 3 January 2027 (Day 90). Registration closes on 6 December 2026.

Why a 90-Day XAT 2027 Preparation Plan Works

XAT sits late in the MBA calendar. CAT is on 29 November, and XAT follows more than a month later, so you get a clean second window after CAT instead of a squeeze. This XAT 2027 preparation plan uses that window deliberately: the first 55 days build skills that also help CAT, and the last 35 days narrow down to XAT’s own quirks.

Counting 6 October as Day 1, the arithmetic is neat. Registration closes on Day 62, the admit card is expected around Day 76, and XAT itself lands on Day 90. You also get Day 89 as a full rest-and-revise day before the paper.

XAT dates are from the official XAT website; the admit card date is listed there as tentative. The CAT date is from iimcat.ac.in. Recheck both sites before acting on any date.

One practical point first: do not wait for the registration deadline. Registration opened on 15 July and closes on 6 December, and the official site warns that your email and mobile number cannot be changed after registration. Register in the first fortnight, check both details twice, and take the deadline out of your head for good.

What the Official XAT 2027 Pattern Means for You

The official XAT 2027 pattern has 95 questions across four sections, with 180 minutes in total. The first three sections share a long block of time and you can move between them freely, while General Knowledge is a short block at the end. Each question carries 1 mark, and a wrong answer costs 0.25 marks.

*Section structure, the GK rule and the marking scheme are from the official XAT site. The attempt targets are Quantifiers’ coaching suggestion for a first baseline, not an official figure; adjust them after your Day 2 diagnostic. Confirm the exact timing split between the main block and GK in the official brochure.

Three features make XAT different from CAT. First, Decision Making is a scored section and it is not a maths section, so your score there depends on judgment, not formulas. Second, General Knowledge does not affect your percentile, which means you can prepare it with a different mindset. Third, there is a skipping penalty, which we cover in the attempt strategy below. If you want a general framework for choosing which questions to take on, our guide to question selection strategy applies here too.

XAT 2027 Preparation Plan, Phase 1: Days 1–30

Dates: 6 October to 4 November. The goal is simple: know where you stand and fix the foundations.

Days 1–2: take a diagnostic

Sit one full paper under test conditions, using an XAT-pattern mock, and record four numbers for each section: questions attempted, accuracy, time spent, and the topics you skipped. Those numbers set your personal targets for the remaining 88 days. Do not worry about the score yet; the baseline is the point.

Days 3–30: the weekly rhythm

  • Five learning days: rotate Quant and Data Interpretation, Verbal and Logical Reasoning, and Decision Making, with roughly 3 hours of focused work daily.
  • One sectional day: a timed set from one section, followed by a written error log.
  • One light day: revision of the error log, formula notes and vocabulary.
  • One full mock a week: about five in this phase.

For Quant, build arithmetic speed first (percentages, ratios, averages, profit and loss, time and work), then algebra, number properties and geometry basics, then Data Interpretation sets. For Verbal, read widely for 30 minutes daily, practise reading comprehension, and add para-jumbles and sentence-based questions. For Logical Reasoning, build comfort with arrangements, puzzles and critical-reasoning style questions. Begin Decision Making from the second week so it becomes a habit and not a late-stage scramble.

XAT 2027 Preparation Plan, Phase 2: Days 31–60

Dates: 5 November to 4 December. The focus shifts from understanding to speed. Every practice set gets a clock.

  • Sectional drills: timed sets in each of the three scored sections, always followed by an error log entry.
  • Mock frequency: one full mock every fifth day, about six in this phase.
  • Error log: classify every miss as concept gap, calculation slip, misread question, or poor selection. Fix the biggest category first.
  • Decision Making: three focused sessions a week (see the Decision Making section below).
  • General Knowledge: 20 minutes daily on current affairs, as described in the GK section below.

Writing CAT on 29 November as well?

CAT 2026 falls on Day 55, in the middle of this phase. Let CAT revision take priority from Day 50 to Day 55, then take a full day off and resume XAT-specific mocks from Day 57. If you want structured help for that stretch, see our Sangharsh CAT crash course. If you are also planning SNAP, its tests fall on Days 69, 75 and 82 of this plan, so pick your SNAP slot with the XAT mock schedule in mind.

Complete your XAT registration before Day 62, and ideally well before it. A payment or photo problem on the last day is the one setback this plan cannot absorb.

XAT 2027 Preparation Plan, Phase 3: Days 61–85

Dates: 5 December to 29 December. This is the mock-heavy sprint. New learning drops sharply; practice and analysis take over.

  • Take a full XAT-length mock every third day, at the same clock time as the real exam: 2:00 PM.
  • Spend at least as long analysing each mock as you spent taking it. A mock without analysis is only a score.
  • Rehearse your section order, and decide in advance when you will switch sections and when you will leave an unfinished set.
  • Keep two short daily habits alive: 20 minutes of reading and 15 minutes of Decision Making scenarios.
  • Practise the final GK block on its own: 20 questions in 10 minutes, taken after a full three-section mock so you feel the fatigue.

Key takeaway

By Day 85 you should have taken roughly 18 to 20 full mocks. Look at your last four: if the scores sit within a few marks of each other and your skip count is steady, your routine is stable. If they swing widely, spend the taper fixing your attempt discipline, not learning new topics.

XAT is a three-hour paper, and a 2:00 PM start is a different challenge from a morning slot. Run most of your late mocks in that window so your body is used to concentrating through the afternoon.

Final Taper: Days 86–89

Dates: 30 December to 2 January. The work is done; protect it.

  • Day 86: one last full mock, then a proper analysis.
  • Day 87: revise your error log, formula sheet and vocabulary list. No new topics.
  • Day 88: a light 45-minute warm-up across sections, a quick scan of current affairs, and an early night.
  • Day 89: rest. Check your admit card details and test centre, keep your photo ID ready, and plan your travel so you arrive early.
  • Day 90: exam day. Eat normally, arrive early, and follow your rehearsed plan.

How to Prepare Decision Making

Decision Making has 21 questions and it counts toward your percentile. These questions describe a situation, often with several stakeholders pulling in different directions, and ask you to choose the best course of action, rank options, or identify the most defensible stance. There is no formula to learn, but there is a method:

  • Read the scenario once for the facts, then again for the constraints: who is affected, what is at stake and what cannot be changed.
  • Name the principle in tension, such as fairness against profit, speed against safety, or a rule against a relationship.
  • List the realistic options and eliminate the ones that harm a stakeholder or break a rule without need.
  • Choose the option a thoughtful, responsible manager could defend in a meeting, not the cleverest or the most extreme one.
  • Review your reasoning after every set, because the real learning is in why your pick differed from the better one.

Within this XAT 2027 preparation plan, three sessions of 30 to 40 minutes a week is a good rhythm, with a 15-minute daily top-up in the final phase. Because this section rewards consistency of judgment, steady practice beats a last-fortnight cram.

How to Handle the General Knowledge Section

General Knowledge has 20 questions, split into 8 static and 12 current affairs. According to the official XAT site, it carries no negative marking and does not affect the percentile, but it is considered for XLRI selection. That has two practical consequences. You should attempt every question, since a wrong answer costs nothing, and you should not let GK crowd out your scored sections.

  • Current affairs: 20 minutes a day from the first week, using a reliable daily newspaper, with a weekly written recap of the biggest stories.
  • Static GK: one short session a week on business, economy, institutions, awards and basic geography and history.
  • Last two weeks: shift to revision of your own notes, not fresh reading.

Attempt Strategy: Time and the Skipping Penalty

The official XAT page states that the first 8 questions you leave unattempted carry no penalty, and that every unattempted question beyond that costs 0.1 marks. Combine that with the 0.25 negative mark and you get a simple rule of thumb.

  • Within your first 8 skips: skipping is free, so a guess only makes sense if you believe your chance of being right is above 20%.
  • Beyond 8 skips: a skip costs 0.1 and a wrong answer costs 0.25, so the real extra cost of guessing wrongly is only 0.15. An attempt is worth it once your chance of being right is above 12%.

The practical lesson for your XAT 2027 preparation plan is to spend your 8 free skips on the questions that are truly hopeless or time-hungry, and not on questions you could have solved with a little more thought. Once those are used up, an educated attempt almost always beats a blank. Work this out in your mocks, because the right number of skips depends on your accuracy.

Table 3: Suggested time budget for the main block of the paper
SectionTimeApproach
Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning65 minutesTake short sets first; skip dense passages on the first pass
Decision Making45 minutesRead once for facts, once for constraints, then decide
Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation55 minutesPick calculation-light questions first
Review buffer5 minutesRevisit marked questions only
General Knowledge block10 minutesAttempt all 20; no negative marking
This is a suggested budget, not an official one. XAT has no sectional time limits in the main block, so reorder the sections to suit your strengths once your mocks show a pattern.

Work in two passes. On the first pass, answer everything you can solve within about two minutes and mark the rest. On the second pass, return to marked questions in order of how close you were to a solution, and use your remaining free skips on the ones that are still out of reach.

Mistakes that cost the most marks

Treating Decision Making as common sense that needs no practice, leaving mocks unanalysed, burning free skips on solvable questions, and neglecting the 2:00 PM time slot in practice. Each is easy to fix in the first month and painful to fix in the last week.

Stay with this XAT 2027 preparation plan for the full 90 days, check the official XAT website regularly for updates, and adjust your targets only after a mock tells you to. If you want a shorter framework for the CAT side of your preparation, our CAT 2 months preparation plan is a useful companion.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days are left for XAT 2027?

As of 6 October 2026, XAT 2027 on 3 January 2027 is 89 days away. Counting today as Day 1, this XAT 2027 preparation plan runs 90 days, with exam day as Day 90.

Is 90 days enough to prepare for XAT?

For most graduates who are comfortable with school-level maths and English, 90 days of about 3 focused hours a day is a realistic runway, especially if you are also preparing for CAT. If your basics are weak, start the diagnostic on Day 1 and give Decision Making and Quant extra time in the first month.

What is the XAT 2027 exam pattern?

XAT 2027 has 95 questions in four sections: Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (26), Decision Making (21), Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation (28) and General Knowledge (20). The paper runs for 180 minutes, each question carries 1 mark, and a wrong answer costs 0.25 marks.

Is there a penalty for leaving XAT questions unattempted?

According to the official XAT site, the first 8 unattempted questions carry no penalty, and each further unattempted question costs 0.1 marks. Wrong answers cost 0.25 marks.

Does General Knowledge count in the XAT percentile?

No. The official site says General Knowledge has no negative marking and does not affect the percentile, but it is considered for XLRI selection, so it is still worth preparing.

When does XAT 2027 registration close?

XAT 2027 registration opened on 15 July 2026 and closes on 6 December 2026. The official site notes that your email and mobile number cannot be changed after registration.

Can I follow this XAT 2027 preparation plan while writing CAT?

Yes. CAT 2026 is on 29 November (Day 55), so give CAT priority from Day 50 to Day 55 and restart XAT-specific mocks from Day 57. Much of the Quant and Verbal work overlaps, while Decision Making and General Knowledge are the XAT-specific additions.
